MISSION ADOBE DAY

at

SANTA CRUZ MISSION STATE HISTORIC PARK

Saturday, September 13

Bring the whole family to this hands-on exploration of the lives of the Mission inhabitants at Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park. Period crafts, food, demonstrations and tours of Santa Cruz’s oldest building. This living history day focuses on the lifestyle of the native Ohlone and the European skills learned when they were brought into the Mission system. The oldest building in Santa Cruz is waiting to tell you its stories! This event is FREE and includes entry into the Museum. Celebrate the ways of the Ohlone People of the past with those of the present. Ohlone people will share their traditional basketry, songs, stories, tools, musical instruments, dance, and their history. Participate in Ohlone crafts and game, watch hot rock cooking and fire making demonstrations as you enjoy this unique day. Once Upon a Nest

9:00 a.m.

Listen to tales of the history and lore of the endangered marbled murrelet as you follow the path of its discovery right here in the center of Big Basin with docent Karen DeMello. You’ll also meet typical birds of the redwood forest along the way on this 1-1/2 mile walk. Binoculars recommended (not required). Meet at Park Headquarters.



Redwood Loop Melodrama

11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Celebrate Big Basin’s history! Take a walk into the past on the easy, family friendly redwood loop trail and meet colorful characters from Big Basin’s past—listen to the stories of a pioneering homesteader, an early conservationist, the first female ranger at Big Basin and more! Half-mile, 1.5-hour walk, wheelchair and stroller friendly. Meet at Park Headquarters.



JazzA Concert

12:00-2:00 p.m.

Bring a picnic lunch and join the JazzA quartet in our beautiful campfire amphitheater and listen (and dance if you want!) as they play fun songs from days gone by!



Children’s Games

3:30-4:30 p.m.

Step back in time and play some old-fashioned children’s games. This one-hour program is for children of all ages. Meet at the Old Lodge.



Twilight Hike

7:00-8:30 p.m.

Hear stories of the early days at Big Basin on this easy, ¾- mile walk that’s fun for the whole family. Bring a flashlight and meet at Park Headquarters.



Footsteps of the Founders

Sunday, September 28 at 12:00 noon

Celebrate Big Basin's history by taking a walk to “Slippery Rock,” the spot where the effort to save Big Basin began and find out what it took to preserve this special place. Join docent Doreen Devorah on this moderate 3.5-mile, 3-hour hike with waterfall views. Bring water and a light snack. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Redwood Loop Walk

Every Friday in September at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

How do these grand redwoods grow to be so old? So tall? How are they important to humans? Join us for this fun and informative guided half-mile stroll through a magnificent old-growth redwood forest. Meet the famous Mother Tree, the Father of the Forest and the incredible Chimney Tree on this one-hour walk. Stroller and wheelchair accessible. Meet at Park Headquarters.



Junior Rangers

Every Saturday in September at 3:00 p.m.

Every Sunday in September at 11:00 a.m.

Discover the fascinating secrets of the forest. Explore, practice outdoor skills and play games as you learn about plants, animals, geology, and more. This one-hour program is designed for kids ages 7-12. Sorry parents, this program is for kids only! Please register your child 15 minutes before the program begins. Meet at the Nature Lodge.



Big Basin Nature Club

Every Saturday in September at 4:30 p.m.

Every Sunday in September at 10:00 a.m.

This fun program is designed for children ages 3-6 and their parents. Read, sing, pretend, play and explore! This half-hour program will introduce youngsters to the wonders of the redwood forest. Meet at the Nature Lodge.



Twilight Hike

Every Friday in September at 7:00 p.m.

Join us for an easy, level walk for the whole family. Experience the turning of the day into night in the forest, and learn about the critters that are just becoming active as the sun goes down. Fire lighting and marshmallows at 7:00 p.m.; program begins at 7:30 p.m. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Bring a flashlight. Sorry, no dogs on the trail.



Campfire Program

Every Saturday in September at 7:00 p.m.

Join us in our historic campfire center for an evening of song and story. Serenade the glittering stars and learn about redwood ecology, creatures of the forest or stories of the sky while relaxing in the shadows of the towering trees. Fire lighting and marshmallows at 7:00 p.m.; program begins at 7:30 p.m. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Bring a flashlight. Good dogs welcome!



Coffee Talk

Come to the Sempervirens Room next to Park Headquarters for free coffee or hot chocolate! This is a great way to start your day in Big Basin. Tom Rohlf, a Big Basin docent, will be happy to answer questions about the park and help get you going on the right trail.



Could You Survive in the Wild?

Saturday, September 6 at 11:30 a.m.

Saturday, September 20 at 11:30 a.m.

During this fun, interactive demonstration, you’ll learn what it takes to survive overnight in the wilderness. Dan Friend, a wilderness survival teacher, will lead this family friendly, hour-long program on how to be prepared in the wilderness—what to bring in your pack and what knowledge to have in your head. Bring your daypack and we’ll review the contents! Meet at Park Headquarters.



Family Discovery Walk

Saturday, September 6 at 12:30 p.m.

Join docent Norm Beeson for a fun-filled family walk and investigate the mysteries and wonders of Big Basin’s redwood forest! We’ll discover what surprises the day offers on this easy, one-mile roundtrip walk that will last about 1.5 hours. Bring water, a snack or lunch and an adventurous spirit! Meet at Park Headquarters.



The Road Less Traveled

On this dog-friendly walk, we travel on North Escape Road, a paved road closed to traffic. We tour stunning old-growth redwood groves along beautiful Opal Creek. We'll discuss redwood ecology and park history while exploring the deep shade of the redwood forest. This is a fun, easy, three-mile roundtrip walk with docent Micki Downs and her dog Spock. Bring water and meet at Headquarters.



Felling the Giants

Logging was the major industry in the Santa Cruz Mountains for over 50 years. How did lumbermen cut down these tall trees? What tools did they use? Join Dan Friend, a former ranger at Big Basin, as he demonstrates how loggers were able to fell these giants—without chain saws! Meet at Park Headquarters.



Footsteps of the Pioneers

Sunday, September 7 at 12:00 noon

Join docent Doreen Devorah on an easy three-mile, two-hour roundtrip hike to the site of the Maddock Cabin. Enjoy a beautiful walk through the redwoods and hear stories of the early settlers and their life deep in the forest. Bring water. Meet at Park Headquarters.



Ocean View Summit Hike

Saturday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m.

Join docent David Auerbach on this fascinating exploration through a variety of habitats. This is one of our most diverse hikes—you travel by a mountain stream, through oak woodlands, into chaparral and back to the redwoods. You’ll discuss forests, flowers and fires on a six-mile, four-hour hike. This somewhat strenuous ascent is rewarded with ocean views on a clear day. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.



North Escape Stroll

Saturday, September 13 at 12:30 p.m.

This is a dog-friendly stroll along our beautiful North Escape Road where you’ll experience the forest through touch, smell and sound. Discover the amazing acorn granaries, the fragrant Douglas-firs and the grand redwoods. Learn about the different elements that create a redwood forest. This ¾-mile stroll with docent Oscar Medina will take about an hour. Meet at Park Headquarters.



Boating, Dancing, Dining and More!—Big Basin in its Heyday

Saturday, September 13 at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday, September 21 at 11:30 a.m.

Big Basin was a very popular tourist resort in the 1900s. The park had a hotel, store, post office, barbershop, dance hall, tennis courts, a lake and more! Take a fascinating tour with Dan Friend, a ranger here in the 1970s, and “see” Big Basin as it was in those vibrant early days. This is a one-mile, two-hour walk. Meet at Park Headquarters.



Wildflower Walk!

Saturday, September 20 at 10:00 a.m.

Sunday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m.

Join docent Scott Peden to learn to identify the companion plants of the redwood forest. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the season in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Bring along a field guide if you have one. Saturday’s walk is a four-mile, four-hour walk. Sunday’s walk is a five-mile, five-hour walk. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.



Shadowbrook Stroll

Saturday, September 20 at 12:00 noon

Docent Doreen Devorah will show you a less-traveled trail that takes you by Union Creek, to the Sempervirens Falls and back through the redwoods. This is a four-mile, three-hour hike. Bring water and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Guest Speaker—Gage Dayton

Special Presentation: "The University of California Natural Reserve System"

Sunday, September 21 at 2:00 PM

Gage Dayton offers a presentation about the University of California Natural Reserve System. These natural areas are wonderful sites for natural history/world conservation practices and student and faculty research. Gage, an ecologist, is Administrative Director of the UCSC Reserves. Local Reserves include Younger Lagoon, Fort Ord, Big Creek (in Big Sur), and managing the Island at Año Nuevo State Natural Reserve. How did the Reserve System come about? What do people do there? The Reserves are part of California’s wonderful natural heritage. Come hear about them at Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center.

SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES AT NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH

Natural Bridges State Park Seeks Docents to Lead Monarch Butterfly Tours--
Natural Bridges State Beach, located at the end of West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, is looking for community members who would like to volunteer to lead Monarch Butterfly Tours. Docent training is starting soon and is filled with interesting classes and hikes with emphasis on the Monarch Butterfly Preserve the knowledge and skills you’ll use to lead programs for the public and school groups. We gather on Wednesday Evenings and Saturdays. After completing training, volunteer park naturalists greet visitors in the Visitor Center as well as out in the Butterfly Preserve and provide interpretation and guided walks throughout the fall and winter. Call the docent coordinator at (831) 423-4609 for an information packet and to sign up. Join a community of volunteers who share about the monarchs and other special park features to thousands of visitors, families, and schoolchildren each year!





Park Restoration Parties—

Your help is needed with Park Restoration! We meet every Sunday from 3-5 pm. Projects vary with the weather. As a team it is enjoyable to weed, water, or plant, while knowing that your efforts are helping protect the park's plants and wildlife.

Pescadero Marsh Nature Walks

Sunday, September 7 at 10:00 a.m.

Sunday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m.

Walk among the animals and plants of the marsh and discover a unique world where the ocean and land meet. We’ll search for Western Pond Turtles, see a multitude of shorebirds, and get to know the plants that line this wetland habitat. We suggest that you dress in layers, bring binoculars, water, wear a hat and enjoy the marsh on this 2-hour excursion. Meet your park docent at the parking lot south of the bridge on Highway 1. The parking lot is just a quarter mile north of Pescadero Road. If it is not raining, meet in the parking lot just over the bridge at Pescadero State Beach. The History of Wilder Ranch: A tour of the Historic Ranch Buildings
All Saturdays and Sundays in SEPTEMBER at 1:00 PM
Discover what life was like a century or more ago on this innovative dairy ranch. The hour-long tour includes the 1897 Victorian home, 1896 water-powered machine shop, barns and other historic buildings. Park store sells maps, books, water, power bars, and unique gifts.



Living History Demonstrations: Some Saturdays and Sunday s, 11:00 AM-3:00 PM
History comes alive at Wilder Ranch State Park on many weekends. Come for a picnic and you will find old-fashioned lawn games, and perhaps a blacksmith working in the shop, quilting demonstrations, and cooking in the Victorian. Call (831) 426-0505 for other activities and dates.



History, Nature, and Scenic Views: A Tour of the Grey Whale Ranch Area

This challenging guided three-hour hike will explore the natural and cultural history of the upper hills of Wilder Ranch State Park. Meet in the Wilder Ranch Parking lot. Bring good walking shoes, lunch, snacks, and water. Hike is canceled if rain.



Wilder Ranch Coast Nature Walks: September 6, 20, and 27 at 11:00 AM

On these two-hour natural history excursions you will explore the plants, animals, and geology of the spectacular coastal bluffs. Meet at the Wilder Ranch interpretive center. Bring a snack, water, binoculars, and good walking shoes. Binoculars are available to borrow. Walk is canceled if rain.

09/20/08 - 23rd Annual Ohlone Day at Henry Cowell Redwoods
Saturday, September 20, from 10:00AM to 4:00 PM

Come celebrate the Ohlone People of the past with those of the present. Experience dances, stories, games, foods and traditions of California’s native Ohlone People. See a tradition tule boat being built and talk with Ohlone People who will share their culture with you. You will see traditional dancers and Ohlone demonstrators sharing traditional basketry, songs, stories, tools, musical instruments, useful native plants, language and history. You can throw an atlatl, make a tule craft, play Ohlone games, and try your hand at fire making. This 21st annual event is supported in part by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. Don’t miss the final campfire gathering of the summer! An evening full of fun for the whole family at one of Santa Cruz’s parks best-kept secrets. From 5:30 – 7:00 we will be cooking tortillas on the comal and enjoying live music by a local artist TBA. From 7:00 – 8:00 enjoy old-fashioned campfire sing along songs, stories, skits, and dances around the fire. Beach Ecology Junior Ranger Programs

Meet in the lower beach day use parking lot, for ages 7 – 12. Take a nature walk to discover more about the western snowy plover, an endangered shorebird that nests in the sand. Find out why its important to keep the beach clean to help the snowy plover survive. This activity takes approximately 1 hour and you will earn rewards towards the Junior Rangers program.

The center explores the many Pacific Rim migrations, both by people and by creatures of the air and sea. Memories of New Brighton” day on Saturday, August 16th
New Brighton State Beach in Capitola celebrates 75 years this summer. The public is invited to enjoy a “Memories of New Brighton” day on Saturday, August 16th. The highlight event will be a 1PM walk and talk with Author/Historian Sandy Lydon and Capitola Museum Curator Carolyn Swift. The full schedule of activities will include family crafts and stories 11AM to 1PM, kite making for youngsters 1-3PM and Visitor Center reception hosted by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, 3-4PM.

In preparation for a “Memories of New Brighton” event, on August 16th, members of the public who have enjoyed New Brighton through the years are invited to submit snapshots of family and friends enjoying the park. These will be exhibited at New Brighton August 15 to 27. Photos might include camping, beach picnics, weddings, fishing, surfing, wildlife viewing, or Pot Belly Beach activities. “Secrets of the Redwoods” Nature Walk
Saturdays August 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 1:00-2:00. PM
It’s time to unlock the secrets of the redwood forests with Park Interpreter Mountain as we discover the wonders of this ancient forest. The walk includes an easy ¾ mile stroll that can be continued for a longer loop. Meet at the Little Butano Creek Trailhead, park near the Olmo Fire Rd.

“The Candelabra Tree” Interpretive Hike. August 2, 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Join experienced Docents Mel and Bob as they take visitors on Butano State Parks newest trail containing a truly unique tree. Meet at the Visitor Center with good hiking shoes and water. 2 Mile Moderate Up-Hill Hike.

“Historic Goat Hill” Interpretive Hike. August 10, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
History runs deep in the Little Butano Canyon. Join Park Interpreter Mountain on a journey through time as we explore the popular Goat Hill Trail and its remaining clues to a homesteading past. Wear good hiking shoes and bring water on this 2 Mile Moderate Hike. Meet at Visitor Center

“Into the Gazos Canyon” August 24, 1:00-3:00 PM
Remnants of historic logging know lie dormant along the abundant wildlife corridor that offers a last outpost to struggling birds and fish. Join Park Interpreter Mountain as we explore the little known area known as Gazos Creek. Wear good hiking shoes and bring water on this 2 mile hike. Meet at the intersection of Cloverdale and Gazos roads.

This one-hour program developed for children ages 7 to 11 will include active games, nature crafts, hikes and scientific activities. This amazing opportunity for children will give them the skills to be a junior ranger complete with books and active rewards programs at other California State Parks.

Summer Bugs by Night

Meet at the Campfire Center. Campground entrance off Graham Hill Road
Bring the family and learn about the wonderful world of bugs! The first part of this program is devoted to showing the many different forms that bugs come in! Then when it gets dark, we will move over to our special "bug light" and see who comes to visit! Meets at the campfire center where the group will be escorted to the observation deck a short time later.

Summer Astronomy Programs—All Thursdays in August at 9:00 p.m.
Explore the summer night sky at the observation deck. Constellations, planets, galaxies, and other interstellar space objects will be viewed with the aid of a telescope and laser pointer! Meets at the campfire center at 9:00 p.m. where the group will be escorted to the observation deck. Cloudy skies will cancel program.

Pescadero Marsh Nature Walks

Walk among the animals and plants of the marsh and discover a unique world where the ocean and land meet. We’ll search for Western Pond Turtles, see a multitude of shorebirds, and get to know the plants that line this wetland habitat. We suggest that you dress in layers, bring binoculars, water, wear a hat and enjoy the marsh on this 2-hour excursion. Meet your park docent at the parking lot south of the bridge on Highway 1. The parking lot is just a quarter mile north of Pescadero Road.

The History of Wilder Ranch: A tour of the Historic Ranch Buildings All Saturdays and Sundays in August at 1:00 PM Discover what life was like a century or more ago on this innovative dairy ranch. The hour-long tour includes the newly renovated 1850’s Gothic Revival Meder house, 1897 Victorian home, 1896 water-powered machine shop, barns and other historic buildings.

Living History Demonstrations
Some Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 AM-3:00 PM History comes alive at Wilder Ranch State Park on many weekends. Come for a picnic on the lawn and you may find baking in the Melvin Wilder Victorian, a blacksmith demonstrating in the shop, and lawn games for the kids. History, Nature, and Scenic Views: A Tour of the Grey Whale Ranch Area

Ocean View Summit Hike

Join docent David Auerbach on this fascinating exploration through a variety of habitats. This is one of our most diverse hikes—you travel by a mountain stream, through oak woodlands, into chaparral and back to the redwoods. You’ll discuss forests, flowers and fires on a six-mile, four-hour hike. This somewhat strenuous ascent is rewarded with ocean views on a clear day. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Big Basin was a very popular tourist resort in the 1900s. The park had a hotel, store, post office, barbershop, dance hall, tennis courts, a lake and more! Take a fascinating tour with Dan Friend, a ranger here in the 1970s, and “see” Big Basin as it was in those vibrant early days. This is a one-mile, two-hour walk. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Shadowbrook Stroll

Docent Doreen Devorah will show you a less-traveled trail that takes you by Union Creek, to the Sempervirens Falls and back through the redwoods. This is a four-mile, three-hour hike. Bring water and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Wildflower Walk!

Join docent Scott Peden to learn to identify the companion plants of the redwood forest. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the season in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Meteor Trail Trek

Footsteps of the Pioneers

Join docent Doreen Devorah on an easy three-mile, two-hour roundtrip hike to the site of the Maddock Cabin. Enjoy a beautiful walk through the redwoods and hear stories of the early settlers and their life deep in the forest. Bring water. Meet at Park Headquarters.


North Escape Stroll

This is a dog-friendly stroll along our beautiful North Escape Road where you’ll experience the forest through touch, smell and sound. Discover the amazing acorn granaries, the fragrant Douglas-firs and the grand redwoods. Learn about the different elements that create a redwood forest. This ¾-mile stroll with docent Oscar Medina will take about an hour. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Sustainable Forestry with Steve Auten

Find out what green-certified forestry practices are all about on Sunday, August 17 at 2pm at Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center. Cal Poly practices, teaches, and does research locally at Swanton Pacific Ranch. Steve Auten, a skilled forester and resources manager at the site, is very good at sharing their proactive forest practices with Cal Poly students and, on this day, with park visitors to Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center.

The park is located 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway One. Turn right just before the Waddell Creek Bridge at the sign for Rancho Del Oso Nature and History Center. From Half moon Bay take Highway One south 30 miles. After you cross the Waddell Creek Bridge turn left at the Rancho Del Oso Nature and History Center. This event is free.
